What causes dry, hard and rough heels? Hard skin usually develops when thick skin on the soles of our feet becomes dry, rough and brittle. There can be any number of reasons for dry heels, but the main ones are pressure and lack of moisture retention in the skin. When our feet are subjected to pressure too many new cells are formed. These areas become horny and dry with thickened hard, dead skin, especially around the heel. Dehydrated skin is one of the biggest causes of hard skin. Once moisture is lost, the heel starts to produce thick areas of rough skin as a form of protection. At the beginning, rough skin may just be unsightly, but over time it can cause pain when you walk. Other causes of dry skin and hard, cracked heels, include dry indoor heating, exposure to cold weather and problems with pronation of the foot With over 100 years experience, we’re here to help We’ve been helping people enjoy healthy feet for over 100 years and are always working on ways to make foot care easier. Whether standing or walking, most of us spend well over half of our life “on our feet”. This is fine, because an active life keeps us fit. However, considering that on average, a human being walks three times around the earth during a lifespan, the strain for our feet is enormous. This is why many people, particularly working people who need to be on their feet a lot, as well as those who enjoy active hiking, walking or jogging in their leisure time, often suffer from tired feet. For many people this has become the “normal condition”, but it doesn’t have to be like this. You may have heard of insoles in the past, or may have even worn a pair, but what are they for? Insoles can range from basic foot care and comfort to more medically necessary support. They can help you with ailments that can affect your feet or your posture. Mostly they are there to soothe our tired and aching feet from feeling worn, especially against the everyday stress that we are exposed to daily. Lack of sufficient cushioning and support can lead to your feet feeling tired, so the better support could lead to better feeling feet. Since there are so many different kinds of insole available, learn more about the benefits here, and experience it for yourself. The Benefits of Comfortable Insoles Insoles aren’t only for medical conditions; there are a number of benefits of wearing them in your shoes: Comfortable Insoles from Scholl -Scholl has now developed a new solution that turns your shoes into a comfort zone, taking the burden off your feet and keeping them fit long before they become tired and get that aching feeling: special insoles with the innovative GelActiv technology. A Wide Range of Different Causes There are several potential causes of cracked heels. Take a look at your routine and if you can identify anything below that may be affecting you, then try altering your current habits. Here are the most common causes that can lead to cracked heels: Lack of Moisture – The most common cause of cracked heels. The skin underneath your feet is often dry, rough and chapped. This is because the skin around your heels has a small number of sweat glands. Fat normally supports the skin to become soft, and prevents it from becoming dry. If your skin is particularly dry then cracked skin appears more easily due to less elasticity, and can exacerbate any of the below. Deficiencies – Lack of vitamins and minerals (such as zinc) can affect your heel health. Pressure – Spending a long time standing at work or home. Aging skin – Thick, dry, scaly skin loses its elasticity with age, and as such cracks could have higher incidence as you become older. Obesity – Heavy weight has the potential to increase the pressure on the fat pad under the heel. This can cause it to expand sideways and, if the skin lacks flexibility, put pressure on the feet. This leads to cracked heels. Exposing Footwear – Open-back sandals or shoes can allow fat under the heel to expand sideways and increases the possibility of cracks on your heels. Taking care of your feet regularly is important when wearing exposing footwear. Hygiene – Unhygienic conditions can be a further cause. Water – Water can take away natural oils from the skin and can leave the skin rough and/or dry. Standing for prolonged periods in damp areas, such as a bathroom, can cause dry and cracked heels. Poorly-Fitting Shoes – Standing for a long time or change in walking posture. Genetics – Naturally dry or calloused skin around the heel could be a genetic cause of cracked heels. Why Do Cracked Heels Happen? Cracked heels are caused when the skin around your heels splits apart. A mixture of dryness and pressure lead to cracked heels, as the skin becomes unable to keep up moisture levels and ultimately becomes fragile. What Can I Do To Help Prevent Cracked Heels? Boosting foot hygiene with moisturisers and cleansers can help keep skin supple. Scholl Eulactol Heel Balm Gold is a clinically proven heel balm and can visibly boost cracked skin in three days. Try it and see if your cracked heels improve. If you find that your symptoms persist, even after treatment, then speak to a GP or dermatologist to find out if there might be any other potential causes or underlying health problems. Create the Atmosphere of a Foot Spa at Home Take some time to get the room ready, which might be through lighting candles, burning incense, or playing some quiet music1. If it’s possible, pick a time when there won’t be any distractions or interruptions. 1 Bringing elements of the spa experience into your home can really make your foot spa feel special and extra relaxing. 1 Have a Warm, Relaxing Foot Bath Before using any footcare products and accessories, spoil your feet in a relaxing warm foot soak for fifteen to twenty minutes.2 This will help soften your skin ahead of the treatments3. If you have the space and time, relax your whole body even further by taking a long luxurious bubble bath.4. Treatments Build yourself up a foot spa pedicure toolkit featuring all the essentials: nail clippers, nail files, dead skin removers, and, of course, the Scholl Velvet Smooth Express Pedi with Diamond Crystals*. Take a look at Scholl’s Velvet Smooth range of products for different foot treatments, from pedicures to hard skin removal, to help your feet feel and look better... *Contains synthetic diamonds Keep Your Toenails Trim & SmoothKeeping your toenails trimmed and smooth is essential for footcare!5 Not only will they look so much better, but there will also be less chance of them causing you pain and discomfort.6 When you cut your nails, be sure to use proper nail clippers7, and to cut them straight, not down at the corners 6. Doing this can cause painful ingrown toenails! 6 Then, simply file the corners and edges of your nails softly, making sure there are no sharp edges. 5 Remove the Hard SkinThe hard skin on your feet develops due to pressure or rubbing, usually from your shoes.8 Scholl offers a number of products to help you with this, such as medicated patches to soften built up layers of hard skin. For an at-home pedicure experience, it is recommended that you use the Velvet Smooth Express Pedi with Diamond Crystals*. It comes with an assortment of three different roller heads (extra coarse for particularly thick and stubborn hard skin, regular coarse for excess hard skin, and gentle for providing a perfect finish). *Contains synthetic diamonds Getting Long-Lasting Results The daily use of a foot cream is recommended5 to keep skin soft 3. Be sure to massage in foot moisturising cream thoroughly to really relax those feet2 – or for a real spa experience, see if your partner or a friend is willing to do the massaging! If you’d rather just put your feet up at this point, you could instead try a Dry Skin PediMask, which provides an intense feeling of nourishment for soft and smooth feet. Simply apply each sock to clean, dry feet, secure the sock in place with the attached sticker and leave on for 20 minutes.. Feet are unsung heroes of everyday life, always there to take you to where you need to be, so it’s time to celebrate them by building time to look after them into your routine and giving them a pampering pedicure every now and again! How to Treat Foot Odour Nobody wants to be known as the one with the smelly feet! Staying in for a movie night, shoe shopping with friends or even a night out bowling can become embarrassing and unpleasant for you to enjoy due to that smell! But this isn’t something that you need to worry about, there are lots of ways to manage and treat foot odour. How to Prevent Foot Odour Personal hygiene is a big one – washing and thoroughly drying your feet daily will help keep them fresh. It is also very important to wear the right sort of socks, ideally wool or cotton as they will let your feet breath but be sure to avoid nylon as it can trap the moisture around your feet. You should also make sure to change your socks at least daily if not, twice a day. Putting on dirty socks for the second day running is essentially going to reheat that sweat, leading to a foul smell. A great tip for thoroughly washing your socks is to turn them inside out before you put them in the washer, this way, all the dead flakes of skin have more chance of being washed off. As well as socks, wearing the right shoes is an important part of keeping your feet smelling fresh! If possible, you should wear leather or canvas shoes, again, to let your feet breath and try to rotate your shoes daily allowing them 24 hours after wear to dry out. Another great way to avoid smelly feet in the first place is to use Scholl’s Fresh Step Shoe Spray. It works like a normal deodorant except you spray it in your shoes before and after use. It eliminates odour, boasting fresh, odour protection for 24 hours. It is suitable for all footwear.
Why regular foot care is important Each foot is composed of 26 bones, 33 joints, and over 100 muscles, ligaments, and tendons.1 Their job is to propel us forward but also to act as shock absorbers. 1,2 After a day of carrying the full weight of the body around, it’s important to look after your feet. This includes checking them for anything unusual like cuts, blisters or changes to the skin and toenails, as well as washing and drying them regularly and wearing correctly fitted shoes.3 Home nail salon products You don’t need a trip to the nail salon to take care of your feet. Try using a pumice stone or looking up how to make a homemade foot scrub. Alternatively, you can effortlessly get soft, beautiful feet with the Scholl Velvet Smooth™ Express Pedi. The Velvet Smooth™ Roller head, with long-lasting micro-abrasive particles to help buff away hard skin.4 How to use the Velvet Smooth™ Express Pedi Start by cleaning your feet, washing and thoroughly drying them before you begin. Then, pick your required intensity roller head and insert it into the device – extra coarse roller head for particularly thick and stubborn hard skin, regular coarse roller head for excess hard skin on the foot and soft-touch roller head for a soft finish.5 Make sure you have already inserted the four AA batteries and switched your Express Pedi on. This should start the roller spinning and with an integrated safety stop, it’s safe and gentle. Now you can allow the roller to move slowly over the areas of dry skin that you want to remove from your feet. Try not to push down too hard against the skin, although there is a built-in safety mechanism that stops the roller from spinning if you accidentally do. Try not to hold it in the same place for longer than 3-4 seconds.5 When you have treated all the hard skin areas, and your feet are starting to feel smoother, switch off your Express Pedi and rinse your feet to remove any excess dry skin.5 To clean your Express Pedi, make sure it is first turned off and then push the button on the side to remove the roller head and rinse the roller head under the tap. To clean the rest of the device, wipe it over with a moist cloth and when both are clean and dry, you can reassemble them.5 Store your Express Pedi away somewhere safe with its protective cover on,5 ready to be used again next time! How to do a pedicure at home Get everything you need for your pedicure in one place and put a low, comfortable seat in the bathroom. If you want to listen to music, this is a great time to relax with your favourite songs. You will need: Scholl Velvet Smooth™ Express Pedi Dry towel Nail trimmer and file Moisturiser Nail polish Optional extra – Scholl 2 in 1 Corn Express Pen Step one: remove hard skin Get comfy on your seat and treat yourself with the Scholl Velvet Smooth™ Express Pedi. See above for instructions on how to use the Express Pedi. Step two: nail care Give your feet a quick wash under warm water and pat your skin dry with a towel. Then trim your softened nails and file the corners. Step three: moisturise Apply a moisturiser to your feet. Step four: remove corns (if necessary) If you have hard corns on the top of the toes or the balls of the feet, it’s time to use the Scholl 2 in 1 Corn Express Pen – an effective way to treat corns. First use the scraper to gently exfoliate the top layers of the corn to reduce the painful rubbing, providing relief and allowing the advanced liquid to penetrate into the corn. Then apply the advanced liquid using the targeted applicator to soften the corn for an effective treatment.6 Always read the label. Follow the directions for use. If symptoms persist, talk to your health professional. Step five: add a splash of colour Apply some nail polish. Start with a clear base coat and use toe separators for a fantastic result. Then add a splash of your favourite colour by sweeping the bristles in long strokes down the centre of your nail toward the tip of your toe, then do the same on the right and left. Keeping your feet beautiful after a home pedicure You can keep your feet looking and feeling great by washing and drying them thoroughly every day, ensuring your shoes fit properly and are right for the activity you are doing3 and by applying a moisturiser twice a day.
What are insoles? Insoles are inserts that fit inside your shoes. They are usually thin, soft padding in a foot-like shape that rest within your shoe. There are many reasons to purchase insoles, but for many simple comfort is the most prevalent. How do Insoles Work? We spend a lot of time on our feet, walking, running, and even standing. The strain of tasks in succession can be quite large, especially without rest, and often the feeling of tiredness in the feet can prevail. During periods of exercise, our feet are put under even more stress , which means that the muscles, tendons and bones in our feet have to work even harder. Over time, if not looked after properly, repetitive exercise can even cause damage to these crucial, yet delicate parts of the body. Sports insoles work to protect your feet during sport by creating a barrier between you and the ground. They also provide arch support. Their softness provides a comfortable cushion that supports the foot. During exercise, or even in movement, this will reduce the stress feet can be exposed to from quick movements, or agile turns. What are the Benefits of Insoles? Sports insoles primarily reduce stress and pressure put on the feet during exercise. Also, insoles can make movement that much more comfortable, and feel like a cushion between yourself and the ground. Since you can remove insoles to replace or wash, your feet might be that much more hygienic. It might be a good idea to buy two pairs, and rotate them daily in order to keep them clean and dry for longer. Give them a go, you might never want to go back to exercising without insoles again! What is it? Reflexology is a massage technique which is believed to stimulate specific areas of the feet which are mapped to certain organs in the human body. What is it used for? It is believed foot reflexology may help stimulate internal organs, restore psychophysical balance, detoxify, and relieve nervous muscular tension. Recommended especially for physical and emotional problems, it’s great for relieving everyday anxiety and stress. What does a session involve? A session lasts approximately one hour and is carried out with the patient comfortably lying on a massage table with their head slightly raised. The therapist applies pressure and massages with their thumbs on selected points of the foot following a map of the reflex zones. How many sessions are needed? The practitioner will suggest the right quantity based on the type of problem the patient has. It is said that after at least five to six sessions you may start to see results. What’s the outcome? Claimed benefits include increased energy and a feeling of relaxation throughout the whole body!
Heel pain If you experience pain in your heel, you could have plantar fasciitis. This is an irritation of the tough band of tissue (fascia) that runs through the bottom of the foot connecting the heel bone to the toes (4). The pain tends to develop gradually and is most painful when you’re getting out of bed in the morning and at the end of the day. You can also experience pain and tenderness at the back of your heel, this may be cause by Achilles tendonitis, inflammation of the Achilles tendon, which attaches the calf muscle to the heel bone. When you experience heel pain consider; resting your heel, stretching and wearing comfortable shoes to help relieve the pain. Blisters & Corns Ill-fitting shoes can cause friction and excessive pressure on the skin, leading to blisters and corns. Both conditions can give rise to pain and discomfort when you stand or walk. Often, blisters will heal naturally in a few days and without any expert medical attention. Discomfort from corns can be eased by wearing more comfortable shoes coupled with the broad range of products available at Scholl. A visit to the podiatrist is required if symptoms persist. Ball of Foot Pain (Metatarsalgia) Metatarsalgia is the medical term for pain in the ball of the foot or metatarsal. The metatarsal bones connect the toes to the foot. As a rule of thumb, any activity that could place excessive pressure on the ball of your foot can cause pain including strenuous activities such as running and jumping, poorly-fitting footwear or being overweight. Do not let soreness keep you from going about with your daily activities, explore the wide range of Scholl products to help you with your discomfort. Always read the label. Use only as directed. If symptoms persist, see your healthcare professional.
Get your feet moving with this exercise routine! 1. Start by standing up straight and balancing your weight. Shift your body weight onto your heels, then curl your toes downward. Straighten them and repeat 10 times. This exercise is good for general strengthening, but also to relieve cramps in toes or in the sole. 2. Put one foot on a towel on the floor. Pull the towel, grasping it with your toes. Repeat five times and change foot. When your foot is used to this exercise, you can increase the effort by putting a book or similarly heavy object on the towel. 3. Sit on a chair or stool and use the sole of your foot to rub the shin of the opposite leg, starting from the knee down to the ankle and vice versa. Repeat 20 times. It helps relieve tension around the shinbone and increases the flexibility of the foot doing the massage. 4. Roll a ball under the ball of your foot for two minutes. This action massages the bottom of the foot and can relieve discomfort and tension in the calf and foot arch. 5. Lying on the floor, rest a leg on a pillow at the height of your calf. Rotate your foot 10 times clockwise and then anti-clockwise. Repeat with the other foot. 6. Starting from the same position as step 5, imagine that your big toe is a pen and “write” the numbers from 1 to 10. Try this with both feet. 7. From the starting position of exercise 5, hold your foot in a vertical position (toes up, heel down). Flexing the ankle, point your toes towards yourself, then repeat in the opposite direction. Repeat 10 times. 8. Finish the exercises by standing up, and raising and lowering yourself on the tips of your toes (with your feet together) 10 times.
Signs and Symptoms of a blister Blisters appear like a bubble on the skin1. The fluid is usually clear but can be red if a small blood vessel bleeds in the bubble1. If the liquid is cloudy, this may indicate infection1 . Clean and cover your blister It is best to keep the top layer of the skin intact, to prevent infection and speed up the healing process. For most of us, it is a simple process of checking the blister area is clean, centralising the plaster over the blister to ensure a good seal around the damaged skin. This will allow the plaster to provide protection from dirt and remain waterproof, allowing the blister to heal faster. If it is large or shows signs of infection, please seek medical advice for treatment to ensure it is cared for correctly. The difference between blister plaster and normal plasters Blister plasters look much like normal plasters though they feel thicker and have a slightly rubbery texture. Once applied to the skin, however, they behave very differently. Blister plasters are specifically designed to aid the healing of a blister and protect it against further friction. The healing and protection process It sounds clever, but how does it actually work? Blister plasters contain hydrocolloid and have two layers. The inner material absorbs the excess fluid and forms a gel over the wound. This retains any moisture which may have gathered and a white bubble develops. When the bubble is visible from the outside, it means the blister is healing. The outer layer forms a seal or ‘second skin’ to protect the blister from bacteria and dirt. It is soft, comfortable and breathable. In addition, the moist and insulated environment allows the body’s own enzymes to heal the wound naturally. The benefits of blister plasters – Pain relief and speedy healing One of the main benefits of using blister plasters is that there is instant relief from pain. Because of their flexibility, active gel cushion and strength, the plasters protect against friction between the skin and socks or shoes. Whilst a blister may take a couple of weeks or more to heal, a hydrocolloid plaster can speed up the healing process. With its waterproof and strong adhesive qualities, the plaster can remain in place for 7 days until the edges start lifting when hopefully the wound is well on its way to recovery.
