Skin Tag Removal Skin tags are skin growths that are non-cancerous and generally harmless. The medical term for skin growths is acrochordons but they are also sometimes referred to as fibroepithelial polyps and soft fibromas.Skin tags are typically flesh-coloured but they can also be brown or red. They normally appear as lumps of excess skin protruding out from the surface by a thin stalk of tissue. Skin tags often resemble small flesh-coloured bumps in the early stages and some remain as small bumps. However, some skin tags continue to expand and develop into bigger, more prominent growths. Skin tags are usually quite small, under 5 millimetres. However, in rare cases, they can grow up to a centimetre.Skin tags are very common, affecting over 50% of the population at some point during a lifetime. The risk of a skin tag increases after the age of 40.Skin tags typically form in areas where there are natural creases in the skin such as the underarm area, neck, groyne region and in the area under the breasts.Although they’re not usually painful, skin tags can cause discomfort if they rub against or catch on clothing or jewellery. What causes Skin Tags? Skin tags form when extra cells grow in the top layers of the skin. While it’s not fully clear why skin tags develop, one of the main causes may be friction that occurs due to different areas of skin rubbing against each other. Individuals who have a higher risk of developing skin tags include those who have: Diabetes Obesity A family history of skin tags Metabolic syndrome Some medical experts believe that there may be a connection between skin tags and the natural ageing process as well as fluctuating hormones. How to help prevent Skin Tags There is no guaranteed way to prevent skin tags from forming. However, because skin tags can form in part from friction, it may be helpful to avoid wearing clothing and jewellery that rubs against the skin.Because individuals with obesity have a higher risk of skin tags, achieving and maintaining a healthy weight may help discourage the formation of skin tags. There is also evidence to suggest that high blood sugar levels may be associated with skin tags. For this reason, exercising and following a healthy diet may help reduce the risk of skin tags. However, while skin tags may not be aesthetically pleasing, they are not harmful. How to get rid of Skin Tags There are several different ways to get rid of skin tags. The following procedures can be performed in a doctor’s office, usually by a dermatologist:Cryotherapy — One way to get rid of a skin tag is through a process called cryotherapy or freezing. Doctors typically use a chemical such as liquid nitrogen to freeze the skin tag so that the tissue dies and falls off. It may take up to two weeks for a skin tag to detach following cryotherapy treatment. Sometimes multiple treatments are necessary.Excision — Skin tags can be removed quickly during a procedure called excision. This requires a doctor to cut off the skin tag with a scalpel or scissors.Cauterization — Using a small device called a cautery, a doctor can get rid of a skin tag by burning it off. This method may require several treatments in order to eliminate the skin tag completely.Electrodessication — Using an electrode, a doctor can dry out a skin tag by introducing an electric current. This causes the skin tag to detach. It’s important to keep in mind that skin tags are living tissue with blood circulating. Attempting to cut off a skin tag can lead to bleeding and a potential infection. You can also remove skin tags at home with Scholl’s® Freeze Away® Skin Tag Remover. The skin tag removal kit uses a combination of dimethyl ether, isobutane, and propane to freeze skin tags so that they drop off. Most skin tags only require one treatment and usually fall off within two weeks of using the product. However, the process can be repeated up to four times for more stubborn skin tags. Our skin tag removal kit is designed for simplicity, guiding you through a five-step process for fast, painless, and permanent results. Ensure treated skin tags don’t return. Our kit safely and efficiently helps with the removal of skin tags, providing a reliable solution with professional-grade results. Some skin tags may resemble other types of growths that could pose a health threat. If you have a skin growth that rapidly changes in appearance or is bleeding or causing pain, see your doctor for an evaluation and diagnosis. Related products Scholl Freeze Away™ Skin Tag Remover
There’s a variety of different foot files with which you can choose to work. Metal foot files literally ‘grate’ the calluses off the bottom or side of your foot. They need to be used quite lightly to prevent injury so be careful not to use too much pressure. Sandpaper foot files are made from emery paper. They are not as durable as metal files and are used for minor or dead skin removal. The two types can be used together with a metal file first followed by a softer sandpaper foot file to give the skin a smooth feel. Scholl ExpertCare File and Smooth 2-in-1 Electronic Foot File System A third, very efficient, option is an electronic version such as the Scholl ExpertCare File and Smooth 2-in-1 Electronic Foot File System which has both coarse and smooth exfoliators. Through a quick flip of the handle, it embraces the removal of tough, hard skin on one side with a softer treatment for smaller calluses and finishing off on the other side. Eliminating hard skin Make sure feet are clean. Using a coarse file, first begin to work on the dead skin areas. These are usually around the back and bottom of the heel or to each side of the toes. Avoid irritated or broken skin to prevent further damaging it. Rinse away the filed off dead skin with a damp sponge or flannel and water. Continue buffing with a less abrasive file which will leave the treated area soft and smooth. Dry your feet with a towel to reveal soft, healthy skin. Cleanliness Feet harbour bacteria easily so it is especially important to remember to wash your feet first and clean the pedi or pedi devices you have used afterwards. Some pedi devices have refills so you can change them after each session and simply throw away the used ones. The health benefits of regular filing Frequent scrubbing and filing of your feet can promote blood circulation. Not only do your feet become more healthy but you may feel more relaxed and rejuvenated. Dead skin, if left on the foot, can trap dirt and bacteria which can lead to dangerous fungal infections. Regularly scraping off dead skin keeps your feet germ free. Quick and easy It takes just a few minutes to file your feet and the technique is simple to learn. Adding a home pedicure in to your weekly care routine could save you a lot of discomfort! After filing, finish with a daily treatment foot cream which will stop hard skin and calluses re-emerging and keep the skin protected. A Wide Range of Different Causes There are several potential causes of cracked heels. Take a look at your routine and if you can identify anything below that may be affecting you, then try altering your current habits. Here are the most common causes that can lead to cracked heels: Lack of Moisture – The most common cause of cracked heels. The skin underneath your feet is often dry, rough and chapped. This is because the skin around your heels has a small number of sweat glands. Fat normally supports the skin to become soft, and prevents it from becoming dry. If your skin is particularly dry then cracked skin appears more easily due to less elasticity, and can exacerbate any of the below. Deficiencies – Lack of vitamins and minerals (such as zinc) can affect your heel health. Pressure – Spending a long time standing at work or home. Aging skin – Thick, dry, scaly skin loses its elasticity with age, and as such cracks could have higher incidence as you become older. Obesity – Heavy weight has the potential to increase the pressure on the fat pad under the heel. This can cause it to expand sideways and, if the skin lacks flexibility, put pressure on the feet. This leads to cracked heels. Exposing Footwear – Open-back sandals or shoes can allow fat under the heel to expand sideways and increases the possibility of cracks on your heels. Taking care of your feet regularly is important when wearing exposing footwear. Hygiene – Unhygienic conditions can be a further cause. Water – Water can take away natural oils from the skin and can leave the skin rough and/or dry. Standing for prolonged periods in damp areas, such as a bathroom, can cause dry and cracked heels. Poorly-Fitting Shoes – Standing for a long time or change in walking posture. Genetics – Naturally dry or calloused skin around the heel could be a genetic cause of cracked heels. Why Do Cracked Heels Happen? Cracked heels are caused when the skin around your heels splits apart. A mixture of dryness and pressure lead to cracked heels, as the skin becomes unable to keep up moisture levels and ultimately becomes fragile. What Can I Do To Help Prevent Cracked Heels? Boosting foot hygiene with moisturisers and cleansers can help keep skin supple. Scholl Eulactol Heel Balm Gold is a clinically proven heel balm and can visibly boost cracked skin in three days. Try it and see if your cracked heels improve. If you find that your symptoms persist, even after treatment, then speak to a GP or dermatologist to find out if there might be any other potential causes or underlying health problems. Why regular foot care is important Each foot is composed of 26 bones, 33 joints, and over 100 muscles, ligaments, and tendons.1 Their job is to propel us forward but also to act as shock absorbers. 1,2 After a day of carrying the full weight of the body around, it’s important to look after your feet. This includes checking them for anything unusual like cuts, blisters or changes to the skin and toenails, as well as washing and drying them regularly and wearing correctly fitted shoes.3 Home nail salon products You don’t need a trip to the nail salon to take care of your feet. Try using a pumice stone or looking up how to make a homemade foot scrub. Alternatively, you can effortlessly get soft, beautiful feet with the Scholl Velvet Smooth™ Express Pedi. The Velvet Smooth™ Roller head, with long-lasting micro-abrasive particles to help buff away hard skin.4 How to use the Velvet Smooth™ Express Pedi Start by cleaning your feet, washing and thoroughly drying them before you begin. Then, pick your required intensity roller head and insert it into the device – extra coarse roller head for particularly thick and stubborn hard skin, regular coarse roller head for excess hard skin on the foot and soft-touch roller head for a soft finish.5 Make sure you have already inserted the four AA batteries and switched your Express Pedi on. This should start the roller spinning and with an integrated safety stop, it’s safe and gentle. Now you can allow the roller to move slowly over the areas of dry skin that you want to remove from your feet. Try not to push down too hard against the skin, although there is a built-in safety mechanism that stops the roller from spinning if you accidentally do. Try not to hold it in the same place for longer than 3-4 seconds.5 When you have treated all the hard skin areas, and your feet are starting to feel smoother, switch off your Express Pedi and rinse your feet to remove any excess dry skin.5 To clean your Express Pedi, make sure it is first turned off and then push the button on the side to remove the roller head and rinse the roller head under the tap. To clean the rest of the device, wipe it over with a moist cloth and when both are clean and dry, you can reassemble them.5 Store your Express Pedi away somewhere safe with its protective cover on,5 ready to be used again next time! Signs and Symptoms of a blister Blisters appear like a bubble on the skin1. The fluid is usually clear but can be red if a small blood vessel bleeds in the bubble1. If the liquid is cloudy, this may indicate infection1 . Clean and cover your blister It is best to keep the top layer of the skin intact, to prevent infection and speed up the healing process. For most of us, it is a simple process of checking the blister area is clean, centralising the plaster over the blister to ensure a good seal around the damaged skin. This will allow the plaster to provide protection from dirt and remain waterproof, allowing the blister to heal faster. If it is large or shows signs of infection, please seek medical advice for treatment to ensure it is cared for correctly. The difference between blister plaster and normal plasters Blister plasters look much like normal plasters though they feel thicker and have a slightly rubbery texture. Once applied to the skin, however, they behave very differently. Blister plasters are specifically designed to aid the healing of a blister and protect it against further friction. The healing and protection process It sounds clever, but how does it actually work? Blister plasters contain hydrocolloid and have two layers. The inner material absorbs the excess fluid and forms a gel over the wound. This retains any moisture which may have gathered and a white bubble develops. When the bubble is visible from the outside, it means the blister is healing. The outer layer forms a seal or ‘second skin’ to protect the blister from bacteria and dirt. It is soft, comfortable and breathable. In addition, the moist and insulated environment allows the body’s own enzymes to heal the wound naturally. The benefits of blister plasters – Pain relief and speedy healing One of the main benefits of using blister plasters is that there is instant relief from pain. Because of their flexibility, active gel cushion and strength, the plasters protect against friction between the skin and socks or shoes. Whilst a blister may take a couple of weeks or more to heal, a hydrocolloid plaster can speed up the healing process. With its waterproof and strong adhesive qualities, the plaster can remain in place for 7 days until the edges start lifting when hopefully the wound is well on its way to recovery.
