A Wide Range of Different Causes There are several potential causes of cracked heels. Take a look at your routine and if you can identify anything below that may be affecting you, then try altering your current habits. Here are the most common causes that can lead to cracked heels: Lack of Moisture – The most common cause of cracked heels. The skin underneath your feet is often dry, rough and chapped. How to Treat Foot Odour Nobody wants to be known as the one with the smelly feet! Staying in for a movie night, shoe shopping with friends or even a night out bowling can become embarrassing and unpleasant for you to enjoy due to that smell! But this isn’t something that you need to worry about, there are lots of ways to manage and treat foot odour. How to Prevent Foot Odour Personal hygiene is a big one – washing and thoroughly drying your feet daily will help keep them fresh. It is also very important to wear the right sort of socks, ideally wool or cotton as they will let your feet breath but be sure to avoid nylon as it can trap the moisture around your feet. You should also make sure to change your socks at least daily if not, twice a day. Putting on dirty socks for the second day running is essentially going to reheat that sweat, leading to a foul smell. A great tip for thoroughly washing your socks is to turn them inside out before you put them in the washer, this way, all the dead flakes of skin have more chance of being washed off. As well as socks, wearing the right shoes is an important part of keeping your feet smelling fresh! If possible, you should wear leather or canvas shoes, again, to let your feet breath and try to rotate your shoes daily allowing them 24 hours after wear to dry out. What is it? Reflexology is a massage technique which is believed to stimulate specific areas of the feet which are mapped to certain organs in the human body. What is it used for? Heel pain If you experience pain in your heel, you could have plantar fasciitis. This is an irritation of the tough band of tissue (fascia) that runs through the bottom of the foot connecting the heel bone to the toes (4). The pain tends to develop gradually and is most painful when you’re getting out of bed in the morning and at the end of the day. You can also experience pain and tenderness at the back of your heel, this may be cause by Achilles tendonitis, inflammation of the Achilles tendon, which attaches the calf muscle to the heel bone. When you experience heel pain consider; resting your heel, stretching and wearing comfortable shoes to help relieve the pain. Blisters & Corns Ill-fitting shoes can cause friction and excessive pressure on the skin, leading to blisters and corns. Both conditions can give rise to pain and discomfort when you stand or walk. Often, blisters will heal naturally in a few days and without any expert medical attention. Get your feet moving with this exercise routine! 1. Start by standing up straight and balancing your weight. Shift your body weight onto your heels, then curl your toes downward. Straighten them and repeat 10 times. This exercise is good for general strengthening, but also to relieve cramps in toes or in the sole. 2. Put one foot on a towel on the floor. Pull the towel, grasping it with your toes. Repeat five times and change foot. When your foot is used to this exercise, you can increase the effort by putting a book or similarly heavy object on the towel. 3. Sit on a chair or stool and use the sole of your foot to rub the shin of the opposite leg, starting from the knee down to the ankle and vice versa. Repeat 20 times. It helps relieve tension around the shinbone and increases the flexibility of the foot doing the massage. 4. Roll a ball under the ball of your foot for two minutes. This action massages the bottom of the foot and can relieve discomfort and tension in the calf and foot arch. 5. Lying on the floor, rest a leg on a pillow at the height of your calf. Rotate your foot 10 times clockwise and then anti-clockwise. Repeat with the other foot. 6. Starting from the same position as step 5, imagine that your big toe is a pen and “write” the numbers from 1 to 10. Try this with both feet. 7. From the starting position of exercise 5, hold your foot in a vertical position (toes up, heel down). Flexing the ankle, point your toes towards yourself, then repeat in the opposite direction. Repeat 10 times. 8. Finish the exercises by standing up, and raising and lowering yourself on the tips of your toes (with your feet together) 10 times.
Signs and Symptoms of a blister Blisters appear like a bubble on the skin1. The fluid is usually clear but can be red if a small blood vessel bleeds in the bubble1. If the liquid is cloudy, this may indicate infection1 . Clean and cover your blister It is best to keep the top layer of the skin intact, to prevent infection and speed up the healing process. For most of us, it is a simple process of checking the blister area is clean, centralising the plaster over the blister to ensure a good seal around the damaged skin. This will allow the plaster to provide protection from dirt and remain waterproof, allowing the blister to heal faster. If it is large or shows signs of infection, please seek medical advice for treatment to ensure it is cared for correctly. The difference between blister plaster and normal plasters Blister plasters look much like normal plasters though they feel thicker and have a slightly rubbery texture. Once applied to the skin, however, they behave very differently. Blister plasters are specifically designed to aid the healing of a blister and protect it against further friction. The healing and protection process It sounds clever, but how does it actually work? Blister plasters contain hydrocolloid and have two layers. The inner material absorbs the excess fluid and forms a gel over the wound. This retains any moisture which may have gathered and a white bubble develops. When the bubble is visible from the outside, it means the blister is healing. The outer layer forms a seal or ‘second skin’ to protect the blister from bacteria and dirt.
