Why You Should Wear Scholl Compression Hosiery

Long periods of inactivity, combined with the cramped conditions and dehydration which occur on long journeys, can result in swollen ankles and tired aching legs. Scholl Flight Socks can help to prevent swollen ankles and relieve tired aching legs.

What is Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT)

Blood returning to the heart from the legs has to travel against gravity through the veins. Normally, when moving about, this process is assisted by the muscles of the legs, which act as a pump. However, there is a potential problem if you sit in one place or in cramped conditions for a long time, as can sometimes happen on flights or long journeys.

The blood could gather in your lower limbs and, in extreme cases, a deep vein thrombosis (blood clot) can develop.

Signs and Symptoms

  • The symptoms of a DVT may include;
  • Severe or persistent swelling of the ankles
  • Swollen and painful calf or thigh
  • An increase in skin temperature
  • Local skin discolouration

A DVT is not dangerous in itself, but if the clot breaks free and passes through your blood stream into your lungs causing a Pulmonary embolus, it could produce pain in the chest, aggravated by breathing. Pulmonary embolus can also cause shortness of breath and the coughing up of small amounts of blood.

Problems associated with flying

It is now recognised that long periods of inactivity, combined with the cramped conditions and dehydration which can occur on long journeys, can cause a number of circulatory problems, ranging from tired aching legs and swollen ankles to more serious conditions such as DVT.

Factors which may contribute to the discomfort and risk associated with flying include:

  • Cramped conditions in flight cabins
  • Low humidity

Who is at risk of DVT

Everyone is potentially at risk including those with no previous history of leg swelling. The World Health Organisation has found that the following are considered as risk factors in developing a DVT.

  • Previous history of venous thrombosis (blood clots) and pulmonary embolism or history of these in a close family member​
  • Pregnancy
  • Use of oral contraceptives or hormone replacement therapy (HRT)
  • Recent surgery or injury, especially to lower limbs/abdomen
  • Cancer
  • Obesity
  • Genetic blood clotting abnormalities (E.g. Factor V Leiden)

DVT occurs more commonly in older people. Some research suggests there may be an increased risk from smoking and varicose veins
